Plasminogen activator inhibitor-2 (placental PAI) is a coagulation factor that can inactivate tPA and urokinase. It is present in most cells, especially monocytes/macrophages. PAI-2 exists in an extracellular glycosylated form of 60 kda and an intracellular glycosylated form of 43 kda. Since it is produced by the placenta, it is only present in a detectable amount in the blood during pregnancy, which may partly explain the increase in thrombosis rate during pregnancy.
