The gene encodes proteins that are members of the S100 family containing two EF-hand calcium binding motifs. S100 proteins are located in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of a variety of cells and involved in regulating cell cycle progression and differentiation. This protein may function in the inhibition of casein kinase and as a cytokine. Changes in the expression of this protein are associated with cystic fibrosis. The gene has been found to encode multiple transcriptional variants of different isoforms.
