Human S100A8 is a calcium-binding protein member of the S100 protein family. It is highly expressed in the cytosol of neutrophils and monocytes, and is often found at high levels in the extracellular environment under inflammatory conditions. It has been reported that serum levels of S100A8 (MRP-8) protein are elevated in inflammatory diseases including bacterial infections, arthritis and cystic fibrosis (CF). Calprotectin (S100A8 / 9) is mainly expressed in myeloid cells. Except for inflammation, these two proteins are expressed in circulating neutrophils and monocytes, but not in normal tissue macrophages and lymphocytes, so the expression is limited to specific stages of bone marrow differentiation. Under chronic inflammatory conditions, such as psoriasis and malignant diseases, it is also expressed in the epidermis. It was found in the serum of patients with high levels of inflammatory sites or rheumatoid disease, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, giant cell arteritis, cystic fibrosis, Sjogren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and progressive systemic sclerosis.
