S100A4 (Leukemia multidrug resistance associated protein) is a member of the S100 family of calcium binding proteins. S100 family members participate in the regulation of a series of cell processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. S100A4 has also been shown to be associated with tumor growth, motility, invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis, apoptosis, and chemotherapy resistance. It is a fibroblast-specific protein related to the morphology and motility of mesenchymal cells. It is expressed in the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vivo. It is a modified lung fibroblast marker that can be used to study the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. S100A4 overexpression is associated with poor prognosis in hospitalized patients with various cancers.
