Runt-related transcription factor 1 (RUNX1), also known as AML1 or CBF alpha 2, is a 453 amino acid protein containing a Runt domain. RUNX1 is located in the nucleus and is expressed in all tissues except the brain and heart. RUNX1 is involved in hematopoiesis. In human leukemia, the DNA binding domain of RUNX1 is often fused with other transcription factors and co-repressor molecules through chromosomal translocation. In addition to its role in leukemia, RUNX1 is also involved in the diversification of sensory neurons. There are some subtypes of RUNX1, which range from MV 20-52 kDa.
