Ribonuclease H2 is the main ribozyme in eukaryotes that degrades cellular RNA/DNA hybrids. It is also the only known nuclease that can hydrolyze the ribonucleic acid that is incorrectly integrated during genome replication. RNASEH2B and RNASEH2C are the non-catalytic subunits of the RNase H2 complex. The defect of RNASEH2B is a cause of Aicardii-goutieres syndrome type 2 (AGS2), which is a genetically heterogeneous disease with clinical features as thrombocytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly and elevated hepatic transaminases along with intermittent fever may erroneously suggest an infective process.
