NT-proANP is the n-terminal polypeptide of ANP precursor. ANP is one of three natriuretic peptides, with similar peptide chains, degradation pathways and physiological functions. Natriuretic peptides are important heart and kidney hormones because they play a key role in regulating electrolyte homeostasis and water balance, as well as regulating blood pressure levels through diuretic, natriuretic, and vasodilation. Under pathological conditions such as heart failure, myocardial infarction and hypertension, plasma ANP levels increase. A number of studies have shown that plasma ANP levels in asymptomatic patients with left ventricular dysfunction are significantly increased. At the same time, the increase in plasma ANP level reflects the increase in right and/or left atrium pressure, while the increase in BNP level reflects the degree of ventricular overload. Monitoring the levels of NT-proANP and NT-proBNP can provide prognostic information for the development of stroke, atrial fibrillation, sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in severe trauma patients.
