POSTN is a 90 kda secreted protein and is now classified as a mother cell protein. It exists in various normal adult tissues and fetal tissues, and plays a role in the development and function of bones, teeth and heart. Studies have shown that in many types of human cancers, including lung, ovarian, breast, and colon cancer, periglobulin is overexpressed. Recent evidence shows that in the normal tissues and stroma of the primary tumor, fibroblasts express pericylobin, which is an essential substance for maintaining cancer stem cells.
