This gene encodes the receptor for urokinase plasminogen activator and plays a role in localizing and promoting the formation of plasmin. It may affect many normal and pathological processes related to cell surface plasminogen activation and local degradation of extracellular matrix. It binds to the proprotein and the mature form of urokinase plasminogen activator and allows activation of the receptor-bound proenzyme by plasmin. The protein lacks a transmembrane or cytoplasmic domain, and can be anchored to the plasma membrane after a section of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) is cleaved near its carboxy terminus. However, a soluble protein is also produced in certain types of cells. Alternative splicing leads to variations in multiple transcripts encoding different subtypes.
