The protein encoded by the gene is a member of the platelet-derived growth factor family. The mutation has been linked to meningiomas. The reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 22 and 7, where the gene and that for COL1A1 are located, are associated with a particular type of skin tumor, called dermal fibrosarcoma, caused by unregulated expression of growth factors.
