The protein encoded by this gene (Pre B cell leukemia homeobox interaction protein 1) interacts with the PBX1 homology domain protein to inhibit its transcriptional activation potential by preventing it from binding to DNA. The encoded protein is mainly cytoplasmic, but it can shuttle to the nucleus, and it can also interact with estrogen receptor α and β to promote the proliferation of breast cancer, brain tumor and lung cancer. Several transcriptional variants of this gene have been found that encode different isoforms. More variants exist, but their complete nature remains to be determined.
