This gene produces several transcriptional variants. At least three selectively spliced variants encoding different proteins have been reported, two of which encode structurally related subtypes known as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase. The remaining transcripter contains a spare first exon of 20KB upstream of the remaining gene, which contains a spare open reading frame (ARF) that specifies proteins structurally independent of the products of other variants. This ARF product is a stabilizer to the tumor suppressor protein p53 because it interacts with and isolates the E3 ubiquitin protein ligase MDM2, a protein responsible for degrading p53.
