The protein encoded by this gene is part of the SMC5-6 chromatin recombination complex and a member of the MAGE superfamily. This is an intron-free gene. A component of the SMC5-SMC6 complex, a complex involved in repairing DNA double-strand breaks through homologous recombination. By recruiting the SMC1-SMC3 internal polyprotein complex to double-strand breaks, the complex may promote homologous recombination of sister chromatids. This complex maintains telomeres through ALT (alternative telomere extension) cell line reorganization and mediates the threonylation of the mask protein complex (telomere) component, which is thought to shelterin complex disassembly in ALT-associated PML bodies (APBs).
