MUC16, also known as CA125, is believed to provide a protective and lubricating barrier on the mucosal surface to prevent particles and infectious pathogens. It is a serum marker that is often used to monitor patients with ovarian cancer in gynecological practice. Most biochemical studies have concluded that MUC16 is a high-molecular-weight glycoprotein, although some researchers estimate that its size is between 200 and 2000 kDa, and smaller subunits have been described. The antibody recognizes the C-term of MUC16.
