The MMP family are involved in the breakdown of the extracellular matrix during normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. The gene encodes an enzyme that degrades type IV collagen, a major structural component of the basement membrane. This enzyme plays a role in the menstrual breakdown, vascularization and inflammatory response of endometrium.
