Melan-A is a melanocyte differentiation antigen that can be recognized by autologous cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Melan-A is also called mar -1 (melanoma antigen recognized by T cells). The Melan-A/MART-1 gene encodes this protein, 20-22 kDa, which is related to the endoplasmic reticulum and melanosomes. The function of this protein is unclear. Melanin-a is isolated as a melanoma-specific antigen. It is a transmembrane protein that is expressed in skin, retina and most cultured melanocytes and melanomas. Melan A is expressed in more than 85% of melanomas.
