Mcl-1 (Myeloid Cell Leukemia 1) encodes an anti-apoptotic protein and belongs to the Bcl-2 family. Alternative splicing leads to multiple transcript variations. The longest gene product (subtype 1) increases cell survival by inhibiting apoptosis, while the shorter gene product (subtype 2 and subtype 3) alternate splicing promotes apoptosis and induces death.
