LIF is a pleiotropic cytokine that plays a role in several different systems. It is involved in the induction of hematopoietic differentiation of normal leukemia and myeloid leukemia cells, the induction of neuronal cell differentiation, the regulation of mesenchymal epithelial transformation during kidney development, and may also participate in the immune tolerance of the maternal-fetal interface.
