The nuclear layer consists of a two-dimensional matrix of proteins close to the nuclear membrane. The lamin family constitutes the matrix and is highly conserved in evolution. During mitosis, the laminin is phosphorylated and the laminar matrix is reversibly broken down. Lamin is thought to be involved in nuclear stability, chromatin structure and gene expression. There are two types of vertebrate lamins, A and B. This gene encodes one of two B-type proteins, B1. Alternative splicing leads to transcriptional variants, and duplication of this gene is associated with autosomal dominant adult-onset white matter dystrophy (ADLD).
