The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine belonging to the IL10 cytokine subfamily, also known as melanoma differentiation-associated protein-like protein. This cytokine is found to be preferentially expressed in monocytes. It can bind to the IL20 receptor complex, leading to the activation of signal sensors and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). According to reports, similar cytokines in mice up-regulate the expression of IL6 and tnf- and induce apoptosis, suggesting that the cells play a role in the inflammatory response. In addition, splice transcription variants encoding different subtypes have been described.
