This histidine-rich glycoprotein contains two cystine-like domains located in plasma and platelets. The physiological function has not been determined, but it is known that the protein can bind to heme, dyes and divalent metal ions. It can inhibit the formation of rosettes and interact with heparin, thromboreactive protein and plasminogen. The two effects of the protein, inhibition of fibrinolysis and reduction of inhibition of coagulation, indicate potential pro-thrombotic effects. Mutations in this gene cause thrombotic episodes due to abnormal histidine-rich glycoprotein levels.
