This gene belongs to the Ras oncogene family, and its members are related to the transforming genes of mammalian sarcoma retroviruses. The products encoded by these genes play a role in the signal transduction pathway. These proteins can bind GTP and GDP, and have inherent GTPase activity. The protein undergoes a continuous cycle of depalmitylation and repalmitylation, which regulates its rapid exchange between the plasma membrane and the Golgi apparatus. Mutations in this gene can cause Costello syndrome, which is characterized by accelerated prenatal development, underdevelopment after birth, prone to tumor formation, mental retardation, skin and musculoskeletal abnormalities, unique facial appearance, and cardiovascular abnormalities. Disease. Defects in this gene are associated with a variety of cancers, including bladder cancer, follicular thyroid cancer, and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Multiple transcription variants encoding different subtypes have been identified as this gene.
