Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a class of enzymes that play an important role in the detoxification process by catalyzing the combination of many hydrophobic and electrophilic compounds with reducing glutathione. According to their biochemical, immunological and structural properties, soluble GSTs are divided into four categories: alpha, mu, pi and theta. The GST family member is a polymorphic gene that encodes active and functionally different variant proteins of GSTP1, which is believed to play a role in the metabolism of xenobiotics, the susceptibility to cancer and other diseases.
