Cytoplasmic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione transferase encode two different epigenetics. This gene encodes glutathione S-transferase belonging to the mu class. Mu-type enzymes play a role in the detoxification of electrophilic compounds by binding to glutathione, including carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins and oxidative stress products. The genes encoding mu-type enzymes are organized in a gene cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are considered to be highly polymorphic. These genetic mutations can change the sensitivity of individuals to carcinogens and toxins, and also affect the toxicity and efficacy of certain drugs.
