GLUT1, also known as SLC2A1, is a widely expressed glucose transporter and is responsible for the basal level of glucose uptake in most cell types. Human red blood cells express the highest levels of GLUT1. The defect of SLC2A1 is the cause of type 1 and type 2 GLUT1 deficiency syndromes. It has been reported that the high expression of GLUT1 is a reliable immunohistochemical marker of juvenile hemangioma. Due to the different glycosylation status, GLUT1 protein may appear in two or more different forms between 43 kDa and 55 kDa. It is reported that the conversion of the highly glycosylated form of GLUT1 to the low glycosylated form is associated with differentiation.
