GLP-1 (Glucagon Like Peptide-1) is a transcriptional product of proglucagon gene as is glucagon and it is a gastrointestinal hormone secreted from L cells of lower section of the small intestine. GLP-1 (7-36) amide and GLP-1 (7-37) are active forms and these peptides are cleaved in blood by DPP4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4) into GLP-1 (9-36) amide and GLP-1 (9-37) and these peptides lose its activities in a very short period. GLP-1 is known as an incretin as is GIP (Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide). It promotes secretion of insulin from β cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. GLP-1 also suppresses secretion of glucagon from α cells of the pancreas and the concentration of glucose in blood after meal. Drugs to treat type 2 diabetes have been developed by utilizing the functional mechanism of GLP-1 such as blood sugar control through pancreas, delayed gastric emptying and appetite suppression which contributes weight loss as extra-pancreatic effects. This ELISA kit can quantitatively and specifically measure GLP-1, active form (GLP-1(7-36) amide and GLP-1 (7-37)).
