GIP together with GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1) belongs to the protein family called incretins. GIP was termed upon it's discovery gastric inhibitory peptide and nowadays is also referred to as glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide. The incretins are gastrointestinal hormones that amongst others regulate insulin release after food intake. This assay is intended to measure both active GIP (1-42) and inactive GIP (3-42) in total.
