The Lewis tissue blood system consists of a group of concentrated glycophospholipids synthesized by exocrine epithelial cells and circulating in body fluids. Glycophospholipids play a role in embryogenesis, tissue differentiation, tumor metastasis, inflammation and bacterial adhesion. They are absorbed by red blood cells a second time, resulting in the Lewis phenotype. It encodes enzymes with alpha-(1,3)-focusyltransferase and alpha-(1,4)-focusyltransferase activities. The mutation of this gene is the main reason for the negative phenotype of Lewis antigen. This gene has been found to encode multiple alternative splicing variants of the same protein.
