FOLR1 is a 38-kDA glycoprotein belonging to the folate receptor family. The receptor binds folic acid and a reduced folic acid derivative and mediates the delivery of 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid into the cell interior. FOLR1 is a secretory protein anchored to the cell membrane by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol connection or in a soluble form. FOLR1 expression is usually confined to the root tip surface of the lung, kidney, and choroid plexus epithelium, but is overexpressed in a variety of solid tumors such as ovarian cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, renal cancer, and high-grade osteosarcoma.
