The gene is human stomach cancer transforming factor from FGF related oncogene, and the protein it encodes is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members have a wide range of mitotic and cell survival activities, and participate in various biological processes such as embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. The gene was identified by its oncogenic transformation activity. This gene is closely located on chromosome 11 with another oncogenic growth factor FGF3. Co-amplification of these two genes has been found in various human tumors. Studies on mouse homologous genes have shown that this gene plays a role in bone morphology and limb development through the SHH signaling pathway.
