The gene encodes a protein that is a member of the FGF family. FGF family members bind heparin and have extensive mitotic and angiogenic activities. This protein is involved in a variety of biological processes, such as limb and nervous system development, wound healing and tumor growth. The mRNA of this gene contains multiple polyadenylation sites and can be translated alternately from the non-AUG (CUG) and AUG initiation codon to produce five isomers of different properties. The subtype of CUG initiation is located in the nucleus and is responsible for the intracellular effect, while the subtype of AUGO initiation is mainly cytoplasmic and responsible for the paracrine and autocrine effect of FGF.
