The protein that the gene encodes is a beta component of fibrinogen. After blood vessel damage, fibrinogen is lysed by thrombin to form fibrin, the most abundant component of blood clots. In addition, fibrinogen and various lytic products of fibrin regulate cell adhesion and diffusion, showing vasoconstriction and chemotactic activity, and are mitogens of various cell types. Mutations in this gene can lead to a variety of diseases, including nonbrinogenemia, nonfibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemia, and thrombogenic tendencies.
