The gene encodes a subunit of the clotting factor fibrinogen, which is part of a blood clot. After vascular injury, during the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, the encoded preproteins were hydrolyzed by thrombin. Mutations in this gene can lead to a variety of diseases, including abnormal fibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemia, non-fibrinogenemia and renal amyloidosis.
