The protein encoded by this gene is a homodimer integral membrane gelatinase belonging to the serine protease family. It is selectively expressed in reactive stromal fibroblasts in epithelial carcinoma, granulation tissue in wound healing, bone malignant cells, and soft tissue sarcoma. The protein is thought to be involved in controlling fibroblast growth or epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during development, tissue repair and epithelial canceration.
