This gene (verb b2 erythroid leukemia virus oncogene homolog 3) encodes a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family of receptor tyrosine kinases. This membrane-bound protein has a neuregulin-binding domain, but no active kinase domain. Therefore, it can bind to this ligand, but does not transmit a signal to the cell through protein phosphorylation. However, it does form heterodimers with other EGF receptor family members with kinase activity. Heterodimerization leads to activation of pathways that lead to cell proliferation or differentiation. The amplification of this gene and/or overexpression of its protein has been reported in many cancers, including prostate cancer, bladder cancer and breast cancer.
