EGFR is a cell surface receptor for members of the epidermal growth factor family of extracellular protein ligands. The protein binds to ligands and induces dimerization of receptors and autophosphorylation of tyrosine, leading to cell proliferation. Recent studies have shown that EGFR plays a key role in the development and progression of cancer, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and metastatic spread. Mutations in this gene have been linked to lung cancer.
