EGFR, also known as ERBB1, is a cell surface receptor of a member of the epidermal growth factor family (EGF-family) of extracellular protein ligands. The binding of protein to ligand induces receptor dimerization and tyrosine autophosphorylation, and leads to cell proliferation. This gene is located on chromosome 7p12 and encodes a 170 kDa membrane-associated glycoprotein. Recent studies have shown that EGFR plays a key role in the occurrence and development of tumors, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and metastatic spread. Mutations in this gene are related to leukemia and lung cancer.
