Dickkopf-3 (DKK3), a member of a family of Wnt-pathway modulators, was recently discovered as a stress-induced regulator of kidney fibrosis. DKK3 is originating from kidney tubular epithelial cells. Mechanistically, in pathological conditions DKK-3 deficiency causes a reduction in Wnt/ß-catenin signaling in tubular epithelial cells, accompanied by an enhanced inflammatory anti-fibrotic answer in the injured kidney tissue.
