This gene belongs to the cytokine gene family, which encodes a secreted protein involved in immune regulation and inflammation. The protein encoded by this gene is structurally related to the CXC subfamily of cytokines. The members of this subfamily are characterized by two cysteines separated by an amino acid. The cytokine shows chemotactic activity on monocytes, but has no chemotactic activity on lymphocytes, dendritic cells, neutrophils or macrophages. This indicates that this cytokine is involved in the homeostasis of monocyte-derived macrophages, rather than inflammation.
