Thymic lymphoma cell-stimulating factor (CXCL12) encodes a member of the alpha chemokine family derived from mesenchymal cells. The gene product and its receptor CXCR4 can activate lymphocytes and participate in the metastasis of breast cancer and other cancers. The mutation of this gene is related to the resistance to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection. This gene has been found to encode multiple transcriptional variants of different subtypes.
