CRP is an acute phase protein, which is only produced in the liver. Serum CRP concentration is significantly increased in infectious and non-infectious inflammation, tissue damage and necrosis, and malignant tumors. CRP exists in the active phase of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's syndrome, psoriatic arthropathy, systemic lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. CRP levels increase significantly after microbial infection, which is particularly helpful for the diagnosis and monitoring of bacterial sepsis in newborns and other risky immunodeficiency patients.
