Clusterin is believed to have multiple functions such as phagocyte recruitment, aggregation induction, complement attack prevention, apoptosis inhibition, membrane remodeling, lipid transport, hormone transport and/or clearance, and matrix metalloproteinase inhibition. The specific mechanism of action of Clusterin is not yet clear. One hypothesis is that Clusterin is an extracellular chaperone that protects cells from stress caused by degradation and precipitation of misfolded proteins. Clusterin up-regulates or down-regulates mRNA or protein levels in many pathological and clinically relevant conditions such as cancer, organ regeneration, infection, Alzheimer’s disease, retinitis pigmentosa, myocardial infarction, renal tubular injury, autoimmunity, etc.
