The protein encoded by this gene is a zinc finger DNA binding protein, also known as melanoma differentiation-associated protein, which interacts with the cyclin e complex CIP1, and the encoded protein may regulate the cellular localization of CIP1. Several transcriptional variants of this gene encoding different subtypes have been discovered.
