Chromogranin A is a member of the granulin family of neuroendocrine secreted proteins. It is located in the secretory vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells. Chromogranin A is the precursor of several functional peptides, including vasopressin, pancreatin, catestatin and quasistatin. These peptides negatively regulate the neuroendocrine function of releasing cells (autocrine) or nearby cells (paracrine). CgA is one of the most commonly used tumor markers in neuroendocrine tumors. Elevated CgA concentrations in serum or plasma of patients with different types of tumors have been confirmed.
