The gene codes for CEA, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Eleven pseudogenes of the CEA cell adhesion molecular subgroup are also found in this cluster. The encoded protein was initially described in the hepatobiliary duct as biliary glycoprotein. Subsequently, it was detected as a cell-cell adhesion molecule on white blood cells, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells. The encoded proteins mediate cell adhesion to subgroup of other proteins by homologous and heterologous binding.
