This protein is also called melanoma skin malignant 3, which is encoded by this gene and is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family. This protein is highly similar to the gene products of yeast cdc28 and pombe cdc2. It is a protein kinase complex of catalytic subunits and is an important cell cycle G1 progression. The activity of this kinase is limited to the G1-S phase, which is controlled by the regulator d-type cyclin and the CDK inhibitor p16 (INK4a). This kinase has been shown to be responsible for the phosphorylation of retinoblastoma gene product (Rb). The gene and its related proteins including d-type cyclin, p16 (INK4a) and Rb mutations have been found to be related to the occurrence of various cancers. Multiple polyadenylation sites of this gene have been reported.
