This protein is a catalytic subunit of the protein kinase complex and is important for G1 phase progression of the cell cycle. This kinase has been shown to be responsible for the phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma gene product. Mutations in this gene and related proteins including cyclin D, P16 and Rb have been found to be associated with the development of a variety of cancers.
