The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the melanoma 1 antigen. Most of these members are cell surface proteins, which are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. These proteins mediate signal transduction events and play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and movement. The encoded protein is a cell surface glycoprotein known to be complexed with integrins. It can be used as a sign of platelet activation. The lack of this protein is related to Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome. This gene is also related to tumor progression. Alternative splicing leads to variations in multiple transcripts encoding different protein subtypes.
