CD44 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein, which mediates cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions through its affinity for hyaluronic acid (HA) and other ligands. Adhesion to HA plays an important role in cell migration, tumor growth and progression. CD44 is also involved in the activation, recycling and homing of lymphocytes, as well as hematopoiesis. There are many subtypes of the protein (molecular weight from 16 kDa to 200 kDa), produced by alternative RNA splicing and undergoing extensive post-translational modifications.
