CD146, also known as Melanoma Cell Adhesion Molecule (MCAM) or MUC18, was originally identified as a biomarker of melanoma progression. It is a transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 113-130kda and belongs to immunoglobulin (Ig ) Superfamily. Structurally, it consists of five Ig regions, a transmembrane region and a cytoplasmic region. In normal adult tissues, CD146 is mainly expressed through vascular endothelium and smooth muscle. CD146 is a key cell adhesion protein that affects vascular endothelial cell activity and angiogenesis, and has been used as a marker for circulating endothelial cells (CECs).
